I Was There.

I didn't start Freedom Forge to sell t-shirts. I started it because I can't forget — and I don't want anyone else to either.

When the towers came down, I was on Long Island, building a restaurant. The union put out the call: they needed guys with my skills. I didn't think twice. My whole crew piled into my pickup — some of them riding in the bed, because there wasn't room and nobody was staying behind — and we drove back toward the city on the shoulder of the Southern State and the Belt, tucked in behind a line of emergency vehicles, all the way through Staten Island to the Verrazzano. It was closed. They waved us through anyway, because we rolled in with the rigs.

We parked in Jersey City and carried our gear down to Exchange Place, and the Army Corps of Engineers ran us across the river on a tugboat. They put us in at the Winter Garden — wrecked itself, but it hid just enough of what was waiting around the corner. Then we turned the corner. And we started digging.

I lost track of the days. One bled into the next. We filled buckets by hand and passed them down the line. We searched the rubble near the old pedestrian bridge over the West Side Highway, and we found things I'll never describe to anyone. I slept in the dust when I slept at all. I didn't want to leave — none of us did, not while there was still a chance we'd find someone alive. I finally went home for a little while only after we all understood there was no one left to save. Then I went back.

Every time I turned around there was another patch on another jacket — another branch, another agency, letters I'd never seen in my life, from every corner of this country, standing shoulder to shoulder in the worst place on earth.

So many branches. All there for one reason. The camaraderie, the patriotism, the raw love of country — overwhelming and beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. That is the thing I will never forget. It's why we call our collections the branches, and why everything we make comes back to one idea: we remember who showed up.

Years later, it came back for me. The pile made me sick, and I've only gotten sicker since. I still see a therapist. I still have the nightmares. But I'm still here, and I'm still standing — and this brand is how I keep standing for something.

Freedom Forge is for the fallen, for the brave, and for everyone who still believes this country is worth the weight. Every shirt is a way to say what a lot of us feel and can't find the words for: I remember. I'm grateful. I will never forget.

That's why we say — Wear What You Stand For.
